            One day last week I filled little bowls for the birds to enjoy.  Two bowls were crunchy peanut butter and two bowls were grape jelly!  There are a number of birds that enjoy peanut butter – woodpeckers, wrens, chickadees…and those that love grape jelly – Baltimore orioles, tanagers and even hummingbirds!  So, I was excited to see what might come one spring morning.  The table that I put the bowls on is right outside a picture window in my kitchen that looks out over my backyard!  I sit in my “Mimi” rocking chair having my morning coffee and watch as the birds come to eat their breakfast.

            As I watched on Sunday morning I noticed a squirrel putting his front paws in a little bowl of water and lick his paws - then repeat over and over.  I laughed and thought how funny he looked!  Then I looked at the table with the PB & J and there was another squirrel reaching into the peanut butter with his paws and putting it to his mouth!  His jaws were crunching on the crunchy peanut butter!  And I could tell that he was less than thrilled that his paws were now sticky! So that was what the other squirrel was doing!  He was trying to get the sticky peanut butter off his paws! Do squirrels use silverware?  Perhaps I should put a miniature set out to see! Lol

            The rain has stopped and as I look out my window, I see that all the peanut butter and jelly are gone!  Due to the two days and nights of rain I didn’t get to see who ate it all up!  We are supposed to have a few sunny days so perhaps when I restock I will get an opportunity to watch and see if any fabulous birds come to dinner or if I am just fattening up my squirrels! Will be posting pictures of my guests soon!

Birds, of course, have been flying and living around me all my life.   I studied basic knowledge of birds in elementary school and I was taught the name of our State Bird – the “Mockingbird”, but I’m not certain that I would have known what it was if I actually saw one! Pandemic Bird Watching - September 15, 2020

  O ne of my favorite rooms in my house is my kitchen.   Not only is it the place where the food is – yummy… it’s also the place where I can sit and stare out my kitchen window to watch nature unfold in my back yard.   Today is September 15 th and there is so much activity in my backyard that it has me excitedly moving my eyes from ground to mid-air to air high above.   I haven’t been in the kitchen more than ten minutes and I have already watched a Blue Jay, a Brown Thrasher, a Robin, a Tufted Titmouse, a male Northern Cardinal and a Tennessee Warbler take joyful splashy baths in my birdbaths.   There are three American Robins waiting rather impatiently for their turns to bathe.   Mourning doves are stepping lightly on the ground routing around for dropped seeds from the feeders and juicy bugs crawling in the dirt.   Tiny Ruby-throated Hummingbirds are zipping right in front of me in pairs battling over who will get to sip on the brand new sugar wate...

WHAT WE COULD BE MISSING

  WHAT WE COULD BE MISSING BY: PEGGY WILLIAMS AKA Birdie of Mississippi You may not be a PBS fan because lots of people aren’t interested in educational programming, but I am becoming more and more of a fan of both PBS and National Geographic as I re-coop on the couch from my fractured bones.   Not every program is educational, but since I enjoy math and science I gravitate toward programs about the earth and about outer space.   The nature programs have helped me learn about the grand scope of our environment down to tiny details about our planet.   There are programs about what we see when we look through our telescopes here on earth and also about the photos taken of our solar system from Voyager 1 and 2. And the more I watch and learn the more that I want to become like Solomon and have wisdom!   The programs show me how inter-woven every detail of nature and man are.   And even the word “nature” is such an all encompassing word!   Flowers an...
